Game Groups > Standalone expansions
Games which are based off a separate base game, but do not require it to run. They are often additive in terms of mechanics and/or storyline, but are for the most part similar in their core gameplay.
Limitations
- Full-blown spin-offs (e.g. Sid Meier's Civilization: Beyond Earth) should not be included, regardless if they use the same engine as their immediate predecessor or not
- Updated re-releases which include the base game in its entirety should not be included
- Games distributed in episodes should be included in the Distribution Method: Episodic group, not this one
Notes
Publishers and developers may openly present these titles as standalone expansions, but sometimes as full sequels. While there is no definitive standard for differentiating them, the technical, gameplay-wise and narrative/setting similarities, as well as close release dates, are known giveaways of a standalone expansion.
